The
minutes of the November 20, 2001, meeting were approved as submitted following a
motion by Jerry Wilson and support by Sue Askwith.
Jerry
Wilson provided an updated of the Supplemental Funding Opportunities proposals
received and the Committee recommendations for awarding this funding.
He indicated that 33 applications were received.
The Committee has recommended that two applications not be considered at
this time due to the content straying from the career connection and serving too
few students. Jerry mentioned that
if the EAG would like to renegotiate with the schools of these two proposals to
better fit the Career Prep mold, he would do so.
Of the $44,000 allocated for the Supplemental Funding Opportunity
Proposals, approximately $38,000 in funding was recommended for approval.
Mel Waisanen moved to accept the Committee recommendations and allow
Jerry to renegotiate with the schools to adjust the proposals to better fit the
guidelines. Randy Peterson
seconded. Motion passed.
Gwen
Worley mentioned that the “Making Academics Count” Brochures are currently
being printed. The total cost for
the printing of two brochures (1500 copies each) and the release form (1500
copies) is $1,641. The Workforce
Development Board approved payment of $1,500 with Strategic Planning funds.
The remaining $141 balance will be paid from the Career Prep funds.
Career Prep funds will also be used to pay for the mailing costs of the
brochures. She is anticipating that
the mailing to employers should be sent out in early February.
The
public relations task force committee report was described.
The committee included Ken Fazzari, the former editor of the Evening
News, and Henry Oklat from War Memorial
Hospital.
Both gave tips as to how to promote the Education Advisory Group to the
public. Ideas discussed include creating a mission statement, news
releases, advertisements of the EAG and career pathways, and adding inserts of
flyers. The possibility of holding
a logo contest, similar to the I-500 button contest, was considered.
The Group reviewed a sample news release written by Gwen Worley.
Different slogans were discussed and it was mentioned that students and
parents might be able to assist in the creation of a slogan for the Education
Advisory Group. Another suggestion
of having a table at the Annual Spring Show was discussed.
Ernie Maas, Jerry Wilson, Sue Askwith, Gwen Worley, and a representative
from Precision Edge volunteered to work at the Spring Show.
The
Career Preparation Reduction Relief Application was reviewed.
The regional increase of $16,700 is to help compensate for the 30%
reduction in the current grant. The
group reviewed the budget and action plan.
It was mentioned that the funds have to be spent by June 30.
The Application has been mailed and is waiting for approval in Lansing.
Jerry
Wilson reminded the Group that the Career Prep Conference will be held on
January 21-23 in Grand Rapids. Les
Cheneaux will be receiving a Best Practice Award at this conference.
Information
regarding next year’s grant application was discussed. It was mentioned that
the action plans will need to be more detailed and the deadline has been moved
up a month. An EAG meeting will be
necessary in April to approve next year’s application.
A
request from War Memorial Hospital that the EAG support a letter campaign to
Lake Superior State University was discussed.
This campaign would emphasize the importance of creating one-year
certificate and two-year associates degrees for health care professionals
programs at LSSU.
This would be
beneficial to the area as these programs are currently offered at Ferris State
University and community colleges downstate.
The hospitals of the Eastern Upper Peninsula have indicated a need in
health professionals of this type. It
is being asked that members of the EAG individually write letters to LSSU
supporting this initiative. Dan
Wakeman moved that the Education Advisory Group also submit a letter supporting
one-year and two-year health professional programs. Mike Springsteen supported.
Motion passed.
The
meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m. following a motion by Dan Wakeman and support by
Randy Peterson.
